A Bermuda Hurricane

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Tropical Storm/Hurricane Leslie slowly churned her way across the Atlantic towards Bermuda last week. From Tuesday 4th September the surge on South Shore was building, though the skies stayed sunny. The scenes were picturesque! On Wednesday and Thursday she continued to head along a course with Bermuda as its bullseye. I’d had my fingers crossed my flight back to the UK on Saturday night would be delayed, but the tropical storm also slowed and eventually brushed by Bermuda on Sunday 9th September, dumping just a bit of rain and a bit of wind. It wasn’t my luck as I was on the last flight out of the island before the airport closed, and to add insult to injury, my flight had to leave earlier than scheduled too!

Home on Holiday in Bermuda

Why Woodbridge photos have been quiet the past couple of weeks…

I felt like the plane couldn’t land quickly enough. This is possibly my favourite view in the world!

Heading out in St Georges Harbour to spend my first day back with my family and cousins.

We’re making it look quite the idyllic island lifestyle!

Another weekend, another invite on my cousins’ boat, this time in Castle Harbour. Thank you to them!

My favourite colours.

The ocean is rich!

Another of my favourite views! Labour Day weekend, not so full of labour.

Holiday Catch-up: Rest of the first day in the Lake District

Drizzly in Woodbridge, so some photos from the Lake District to follow on from the ones taken on our first morning there:

Pretty scenes made my run a slow one!

Holiday Catch-up: First evening in the Lake District

Rewinding from yesterday’s post, here are some photos from our walk round Tarn Hows, the first evening we arrived in the Lake District, from a couple of weeks ago.

Some lazy headbutting between the belted cattle.

On the Norfolk Broads: Day 3

Our last full day on the Norfolk Broads: from Barton Water we cruised back to the main river, Bure, and slowly towards Wroxham, popping up the Ranworth Church tower, poking into Malthouse and Salhouse Broads along the way and stopping for the night in Wroxham Broad (where we saw the sailing race on our first day).

A flurry flower of ducks

I’m not sure if the ducks take any notice of this sign to them in a Ranworth shop!

A panoramic view over the flat land from the Ranworth Church tower (click for a bigger picture).

Weathervane atop the church tower

89 steeply winding stone steps, 2 ladders and a trap door to get up the church tower and then down again.

My last photo from our Norfolk Broad holiday: spending the night back on Wroxham Broad, ready to hand back the boat early the following morning.

Norfolk Broads: Day 2

Sunday 8th July: On our second day of boating on the Norfolk Broads (photos from our first afternoon are here), we motored around the rest of South Walsham Broad, then went along River Bure to the River Thure and up to Potter Heigham. Then we began working our way back along the rivers, taking a detour up Womack Water, then cruising up the River Ant, squeezing under Ludham Bridge, as far as Sutton and Stalham, before going back to Barton Water to spend the night.

We putt-putted round the rest of South Walsham Broad first thing in the morning.

A drizzly morning

Like a shark fin through green grass?

Boats are probably the easiest forms of transport for these holiday cottages lining the River Thurne, on the way to Potter Heigham.

Tight tacks required for these 1930’s boats to negotiate the narrow rivers as well as other boats.

On Womanck Water, heading towards Ludham.

Pretty reflections of the evening clouds while sightseeing along the River Ant to Sutton and Stalham.

We dropped our mud weight for the night in Barton Water. It didn’t take long for the geese to find us!

Our neighbours for the night.

Light was constantly changing

On the Norfolk Broads: Day 1

A holiday cruising on the Norfolk Broads. On Saturday my parents, aunt and I collected our little hire cruising boat from Wroxham, nearish Norwich, and set off down the River Bure to explore the rivers and broads for a few days. It was pretty and peaceful, and interesting to see new areas of England that are relatively close to me in Woodbridge.

Saturday 7th July: Photos from River Bure, Wroxham Broad, Horning and South Walsham Broad

Soon after setting off along the River Bure from Wroxham, where we picked up our boat, we stopped in Wroxham Broad for a picnic. A fleet of these traditional sail boats slipped away from their dock and began racing, coming quite close to us at the bottom of the broad.

They reminded me of swans.

Passing by Horning.

Lots of boat houses, some basic, some practically huge mansions, along the river.

A diving Great Crested grebe. He seemed quite surprised to have popped up next to us.

A patient heron.

A typical river view.

It was impressive watching the sailing boats sail as close as they could to the banks of the river, tacking at the last possible moment before they speared the reeds.

We anchored (actually only using a mud weight, just a lump of heavy metal tied to some rope that just gloops into the mud) in South Walsham Broad for the night. A couple of dinghies were sailing about during the evening.
