On the Norfolk Broads: Day 1

A holiday cruising on the Norfolk Broads. On Saturday my parents, aunt and I collected our little hire cruising boat from Wroxham, nearish Norwich, and set off down the River Bure to explore the rivers and broads for a few days. It was pretty and peaceful, and interesting to see new areas of England that are relatively close to me in Woodbridge.

Saturday 7th July: Photos from River Bure, Wroxham Broad, Horning and South Walsham Broad

Soon after setting off along the River Bure from Wroxham, where we picked up our boat, we stopped in Wroxham Broad for a picnic. A fleet of these traditional sail boats slipped away from their dock and began racing, coming quite close to us at the bottom of the broad.

They reminded me of swans.

Passing by Horning.

Lots of boat houses, some basic, some practically huge mansions, along the river.

A diving Great Crested grebe. He seemed quite surprised to have popped up next to us.

A patient heron.

A typical river view.

It was impressive watching the sailing boats sail as close as they could to the banks of the river, tacking at the last possible moment before they speared the reeds.

We anchored (actually only using a mud weight, just a lump of heavy metal tied to some rope that just gloops into the mud) in South Walsham Broad for the night. A couple of dinghies were sailing about during the evening.

See these on the map
